At a glance

General liability insurance at a glance

  • Small businesses pay roughly $42–$55 per month for basic CGL. A $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate commercial general liability policy costs most small businesses $500–$660 per year, one of the most cost-effective protections available for the risk it covers. Insureon's 2026 data across 100,000 small business customers puts the national average at $45/month.
  • Most leases and client contracts require it. Commercial landlords in Nevada and across the other states Liberty Choice serves almost universally require tenants to carry minimum CGL limits; client contracts and government licenses routinely mandate proof of coverage as well.
  • CGL does NOT cover employees or professional errors. Workers' compensation covers employee injuries; professional liability (E&O) covers advice and service errors. CGL is specifically for third-party bodily injury, property damage, and advertising injury claims.
  • A $1M limit may not be enough for some industries. General contractors, food businesses, and businesses with high foot traffic often need $2M per occurrence or a commercial umbrella policy to meet contract requirements and adequately protect assets.

How does general liability insurance work?

Commercial general liability (CGL) insurance protects a business against third-party claims for bodily injury, property damage, and personal and advertising injury arising from its operations, premises, or products. A CGL policy is typically structured with an occurrence trigger, meaning it covers claims arising from events that happen during the policy period regardless of when the claim is filed. Policies carry per-occurrence limits and aggregate limits that cap total payouts in a policy year.

Ways to save on general liability insurance

  • Bundle CGL in a BOP. Packaging general liability with commercial property in a Business Owners Policy almost always costs less than buying CGL standalone, and adds property coverage at little extra cost.
  • Choose a higher per-occurrence deductible. Adding a small per-claim deductible (e.g., $500 or $1,000) to a CGL policy meaningfully lowers the annual premium if your loss history is clean.
  • Maintain a clean loss history. Three to five years without a general liability claim is the most effective way to keep premiums low at renewal.
  • Implement written safety and housekeeping procedures. Documented slip-and-fall prevention, equipment inspection, and incident-reporting procedures signal lower risk to underwriters and can improve rates.
  • Pay the full annual premium upfront. Annual payment versus monthly installments typically earns a 3–5% discount from most commercial carriers.
  • Compare rates across multiple carriers. CGL rates vary significantly across the carriers Liberty Choice works with; an independent agent comparison can produce meaningful savings on your annual premium.

Questions

General liability insurance FAQ

Does general liability cover my employees if they are injured at work?
No. Employee work injuries are covered under workers' compensation, a separate mandatory policy. General liability covers injuries to third parties — customers, vendors, and the public — not your own employees.
What is the difference between occurrence and claims-made CGL?
An occurrence policy covers incidents that happen during the policy period, regardless of when the claim is filed. A claims-made policy covers claims both triggered and reported during the period. Occurrence forms generally offer longer-lasting protection.
How much does general liability insurance cost for a small business?
Most small businesses pay $500-$1,500 per year for a basic $1M/$2M commercial general liability policy. Low-hazard professional offices may pay under $700; contractors and food businesses often pay $1,000-$3,500 or more. These are typical national averages for small businesses; your rate depends on industry, revenue, location, and claims history. Sources: III, SBA (2026).
Does CGL cover damage I accidentally cause to a client's property?
Yes. Property damage to third parties is a core CGL coverage, for example, if you accidentally break a client's equipment while working on their premises. Note that property in your direct care, custody, and control is excluded from standard CGL; that exposure needs an inland marine or bailee endorsement.
Is CGL enough coverage for a contractor or do I need more?
For contractors, CGL is the foundation but typically not sufficient on its own. You also need workers' compensation (for employees), commercial auto (for work vehicles), tools and equipment coverage (inland marine), and often a surety bond. Liberty Choice packages all of these together for contractors in Nevada and the other states we serve.
