Hair salon insurance at a glance
- Nevada cosmetology license requires salon to carry liability coverage. The Nevada State Board of Cosmetology conditions salon operation on maintaining general liability insurance; a lapse in coverage can jeopardize the establishment license.
- Professional liability covers chemical burns, color damage, and hair loss. A bleach treatment that burns a client's scalp or a keratin treatment that causes significant hair breakage are professional-liability claims; general liability alone does not cover these service-related injuries.
- Booth renters create a layered insurance situation. Salon owners who rent chairs to independent stylists face questions about who is responsible for a client injury during a booth renter's service; the answer depends on the relationship and whose insurance is primary.
- Las Vegas's hospitality economy drives high-volume salon business. Hotels, resorts, and entertainment-adjacent salons in the Las Vegas area serve a high volume of clients from diverse locations; higher client traffic means more exposure and the need for adequate liability limits.

| Coverage | What it covers | Typically |

| General Liability | Pays for customer slip-and-fall injuries, property damage to client belongings in the salon, and advertising injury claims. | Recommended |
| Professional Liability | Covers client claims of bodily injury caused by salon services, including chemical burns, scalp damage, allergic reactions, and styling-tool injuries. | Recommended |
| Commercial Property | Covers styling chairs, shampoo bowls, dryers, mirrors, retail product inventory, and the salon buildout against fire, theft, and vandalism. | Recommended |
| Business Owners Policy (BOP) | Bundles general liability, commercial property, and business income for hair salon owners into a single cost-effective policy. | Recommended |
| Workers Compensation | Pays medical and wage benefits for employees injured by chemical exposure, repetitive strain from cutting and styling, or slip-and-fall accidents. | Required |

| Crime and Employee Dishonesty | Reimburses theft of cash, retail product inventory, or client payment information by a salon employee. | Optional |

How does hair salon insurance work?
A hair salon's biggest liability gap is the space between general liability and professional liability: general liability covers a customer who slips on a wet floor, but it does not cover a chemical burn from a bleach treatment applied incorrectly, a scalp injury from traction alopecia, or an allergic reaction to a color product. Professional liability (also called beauty professional liability) closes that gap and should be considered non-negotiable for any salon owner. Salons with booth renters have an additional structural question: each renter should carry individual professional liability, and the salon owner needs a policy that addresses vicarious liability for services performed by renters in the space.

Ways to save on hair salon insurance
- Bundle BOP and professional liability at one carrier. Salon-focused carriers offer package pricing for both the BOP (GL + property) and professional liability (malpractice); bundling saves compared to placing each coverage separately.
- Require booth renters to carry their own professional liability. If every booth renter carries their own malpractice coverage, the salon owner's professional liability exposure decreases, which can reduce the salon's own premium and clarify claim responsibility.
- Document client consultations and chemical histories. Written pre-service consultations and allergy screening records reduce the likelihood of a valid professional liability claim; carriers discount businesses with documented risk protocols.
- Install non-slip flooring and maintain a clean walk area. Slip-and-fall claims are common in salons from wet floors and hair clippings; non-slip mats, drainage, and regular sweeping reduce general liability claim frequency and premium.
- Raise your business-property deductible. A higher commercial property deductible reduces the annual premium; hold reserves to cover smaller equipment replacements without filing a claim.
- Work with an independent agent familiar with beauty industry programs. Liberty Choice has access to carriers that specialize in cosmetology and salon risks, offering better terms than generalist commercial policies. Call 702-742-6322.
